Spring skiing in up to ten ski resorts
Good to very good winter sports conditions in the second peak season
Icy nights and frosty days had the region firmly in their grip for a long time. Now the late winter invites you to enjoy some beautiful spring skiing. Little will change on the snow-covered pistes until well into the coming week. Around 60 ski and toboggan lifts are expected to be running at the weekend.
Alpine skiing
The lift operators have used the recent very cold nights to produce snow effectively once again. There is up to 60 centimetres of snow on the snow-covered slopes, offering good to very good winter sports conditions. In the morning hours, the snow is firm and grippy. The pistes become softer over the course of the day. With partly sunny weather and mostly dry air, the snow cover remains very good. Daily lift information is available online.
Floodlights
Even though the days are getting longer, the floodlit season continues in the ski resorts. Winterberg ski lift carousel (Tue and Fri), Willingen ski area (Wed and Fri), Neuastenberg ski village (Wed, Fri and Sat), Bödefeld-Hunau ski area (Mon to Wed) and Hesselbach glacier (Mon to Fri) invite you to have fun on the slopes in the evening. Floodlit tobogganing is possible in Willingen and Neuastenberg. Floodlight information is available online.
Cross-country skiing
The Westfeld cross-country skiing centre also has a thick blanket of snow. The operators have groomed a 4.3 kilometre trail in the stadium area with technically produced snow. This trail is prepared for both the classic technique and the skating technique. The conditions are very good. The operators are sure that this offer will be available throughout February. Daily updated trail information is available online.
Tobogganing
Tobogganists can also glide downhill on the snow-covered slopes. After effective snow production, the offer has even expanded somewhat. Around ten ski resorts are expected to have around twelve lifts running at the weekend. Information on toboggan lifts is available online.
Hiking
Sunshine and mild temperatures tempt you out of the house and warm your body and soul. At the weekend, there will only be snow in sheltered areas or on the northern sides of the mountains. On the southern sides, hiking is almost like spring. The tourist information centres are happy to provide tips for beautiful hiking tours.
Weather
After a long period of low temperatures, the general weather situation is changing and it will be milder, at least temporarily. The next few days will remain mainly dry and the weekend will be partly sunny. Even in the mountains, there will be no more frost at night from Friday. The spring-like weekend comes with very low humidity. Perfect weather to enjoy the late winter. The new week will start off a little damp and will probably bring more cold again, possibly even a few snowflakes.
Outlook
Dutch families and ‘carnival refugees’ are looking forward to skiing holidays in February. The second peak season has begun in the ski resorts. But things are relaxed on the slopes. Guests can choose from a wide range of winter sports across the entire region. The slightly milder weather is no cause for concern. The snow melts extremely slowly in dry air. This is due to what is known as ‘sublimation’. The water changes directly from a solid to a gaseous state. The snow does not melt, it ‘evaporates’. This creates cold. The pistes remain in good condition.
Snowboard World Cup in Winterberg
The best snow is often found in March, as not only the piste pros in the region know, but also many winter sports enthusiasts. Year after year, the Snowboard World Cup in Winterberg proves that this is indeed the case. On 15 and 16 March, the Poppenberg slope in the ski lift carousel is transformed into a race slope. The best raceboarders from all over the world compete there in the parallel slalom.
