Stable cold winter weather secures offers in the second main season

Around 55 ski toboggan lifts running - safest snow base in February since 2018

Winter has arrived in the Sauerland winter sports arena - and it's here to stay for the time being. It shows its best side at the weekend. The best conditions for skiing, snowboarding, winter hiking and enjoyment.

Alpine skiing

The lift operators have done a great job over the past few nights. There are between 25 and 60 centimetres of snow on the snow-covered slopes. Thanks to the cold and dry air, winter sports conditions are very good almost everywhere. In the current mid-season, there are virtually no waiting times during the week. At the weekend, up to ten ski resorts want to run around 55 ski lifts. Pure natural snow slopes are not included. Daily lift information is available online.

Floodlights

At least three ski resorts are currently offering fun on the slopes in the evening. With the exception of Sundays and Mondays, this is possible at the end of every day in one of the ski areas. The spots are usually lit from around 6 pm to around 10 pm. This can vary depending on the ski area. Floodlight information is available online.

Cross-country skiing

At the Westfeld cross-country skiing centre, the operators have produced snow over the past few nights. They have modelled 2.5 kilometres of trails in the stadium area, for classic technique and skating. A little will certainly be added in the night to Thursday, so that the snow park could grow a little more.
Towards Friday, 2 to 3 centimetres of snow are expected to fall. That's not enough for cross-country skiing on natural snow. Daily updated trail information is available online.

Tobogganing

Around ten toboggan lifts are active at the weekend. They run on snow-covered toboggan runs. Floodlit tobogganing is also possible in Willingen and Neuastenberg. Current information on toboggan lifts is available online.

Hiking

With clear, frosty air and plenty of sunshine, the next few days are perfect for a hike. Stable, cold, sunny winter weather is forecast for the weekend and the entire coming week. With good visibility and a slightly powdery landscape at the weekend, hikers can enjoy the wintry nature away from the pistes. The tourist information centres are happy to provide tips for beautiful hiking trails.

Weather

After a slightly mild midweek, more cold is moving back into the region. Towards Friday, the weather services report 2 to 3 centimetres of snow. The weather then clears up again and the sun is just as busy at the weekend as it was last weekend. Even if the thermometer is in the slightly plus range during the day, dry air and night frosts will keep the pistes firm and easy to ski on. Snow production should be possible from time to time on some nights. The wintry high-pressure weather situation will continue throughout the coming week.

Outlook

The lift operators are optimistic about the rest of the season. The last time there was such a confirmed dry and cold winter high-pressure weather situation and such a reliable snow base for the second main season was in 2018 (with the exception of the Coroan winter, when the ski resorts had to remain closed). Even if it gets milder then, there will be enough snow to keep more than 50 lifts running well into the crocus holidays. The second main season is therefore guaranteed. This also bodes well for the Snowboard World Cup in the Winterberg ski lift carousel.

Nostalgic ski race

Leather straps, woollen coat, long wooden stick and loden hat on your head. Skiers 100 years ago were real heroes! Spectators at the Nostalgia Ski Race in Winterberg-Neuastenberg on 9 February can see this for themselves. This all comes to life every second year in February when the Neuastenberg village community organises its nostalgia ski race. ‘Foresters’, “poachers” and “rich” “townspeople” dressed in the urban chic of the time populate the upper Postwiese. Women in long woollen skirts. Each of the nostalgically dressed runners has a story and presents themselves in the obstacle course or even the jump run. The race starts at around 11.30 am on Sunday.

Snowboard Testival

The Snowboard Testival takes place on Saturday and Sunday in the Funpark in the Neuastenberg ski village. For two days, the Postwiesen Park will become the arena for Germany's biggest snowboard test. Visitors can test boards and the latest products free of charge. These include well-known and popular brands such as Bataleon, Burton StepOn, Capita and Rome. Visitors can watch the ‘Stuff for Tricks’ contest while enjoying drinks, snacks from the barbecue and sound from DJ Cem (Bestpackers Cologne).
